Let’s talk anal. Yep, we said anal!

We’re assuming if you’ve stumbled across this article, then butt stuff has probably crossed your mind a time or two. Maybe you’re 100% ready to try it or maybe you’re just curious, either way, you’ve come to the right place! While backdoor play might seem intimidating, all it takes is a little prep work (and lots of lubricant) to safely slide into the pleasureful world of anal sex.

Communicate

When it comes to sex and relationships, communication is always going to be at the top of our list, even more so when it involves trying something new in the bedroom. Making sure both partners are on the same page is key, so don’t be afraid to share your desires, as well as your concerns, before, during, and after any new sexual experience.

Practice

If you’re getting ready to try anal sex for the first time, there’s actually a way to prepare and experiment without your partner—use an anal training kit! A set of three-four silicone butt plugs in a range of sizes, the set is meant to comfortably build your tolerance and slowly work your way up to getting used to bigger sizes. One major note—just like with partnered anal sex (see below), using lubricant is a MUST with any kind of plug or anal vibrator.

Lubricate

We cannot stress this enough: lube, lube, and more lube! Besides having an open conversation with your partner, proper lubrication is THE most important thing to making backdoor play a success. Unlike the vagina, the anus does not lubricate, so before inserting anything, (penises included), apply a generous (read: a LOT) amount of lubricant first. For an ultra-smooth entrance, try a silicone lubricant that’s highly concentrated and long-lasting.

Relax

Equally important as communication and lubrication? Relaxation. Start the night off with some foreplay (and maybe some wine!) to set the mood and relax your muscles. The last thing you want is to tense up, so take it as slow as you want—have your partner start with inserting a finger or two first to test the waters, and if you’re ready, go from there. For increased comfort, you can ease your mind—and behind!—with an anal soothing gel.

Protect

Even if you’re super comfortable and committed to your partner, it’s always a good idea to use a condom during anal to prevent any bacteria or STIs from spreading. Additionally, it might be a good idea to clean up beforehand with a shower, or if you’d prefer, an anal douche. Lastly, if you plan on having vaginal sex at some point during your romp sesh (or should we say rump?), never switch from anal to vaginal penetration because that can lead to infection.

Once you get more comfortable, you can take things to the next level by adding toys designed specifically for anal play. Pick toys with different textures, shapes and vibrations to really enhance the experience. That said, if you’ve decided anal is just not for you, that’s okay too!
