For the past 200 years, lingerie has transformed from its constricting, binding, and over-the-top origins. After all, beauty is pain. Thank goodness we have seen the light in the 21st century with current lingerie trends. Gone are the corsets to cinch your waist into a barely-there shape. Ancient history are the pantaloons hidden under large hoop skirts. Goodbye to the shapeless nightgowns of our grannies.

Now more than ever, you’re likely to see lingerie worn in public (absolutely scandalous if you did this in the 1820s). Let’s look back at the history of lingerie and the trends that are hitting the runways (and streets) today.

History of Lingerie

What women have worn under their clothes has gone through quite the evolution. We no longer have to spend torturous minutes pulling the strings tight on our corsets and stepping into our hoop skirt like in the 1800s.

Thankfully, a notorious socialite named Caresse Crosby invented what would become the modern bra. She sewed two handkerchiefs and a pink ribbon making the backless brassiere. From there we had the creation of the first push-up bra in 1948, the seemingly pointless Nipple Bra in the 1970s, and the Wonderbra in 1994.

Lingerie is less taboo nowadays than anyone living in the 1800s could ever imagine thanks to things like the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, which started in 1995. But the show was canceled in 2019 after receiving criticism for lack of diversity and toxic body standards. All this led up to the trends we’re currently seeing as women embrace their curves and show off their assets.

Lingerie Trends

Bralettes

Say goodbye to that pesky, poky underwire. Bralettes have been on the rise for years, for good reason! These unlined and wirefree bras are comfy and often come in fun colors that teasingly peek through clothes. Plus, it’s kinda like a callback to Caresse Crosby’s original invention. It also embraces other trends like lacy designs and more inclusive sizing. This lingerie is perfect for summer music festivals, slinky fall sweaters, and any beach vaca!

Outerwear

We’ve come a long way from Madonna’s cone bra in the 1990s. In fact, you probably wear an “undergarment” as part of your everyday look at least once a week, aka the t-shirt (which was initially only meant to be worn under clothes). Let’s take a little walk on the wild side and go further. You’ve seen models, influencers, and actors wear corsets and teddies while out getting coffee (they’re just like us!). Now, you can be just as wild, but a little more lowkey. Start out wearing our animal print cami with a blazer or jacket for a night out. As you get more comfortable, that’s when you break out the bodysuit to increase the sex appeal.

Lace

We love taking the classics and making them modern. Lace has been an underwear staple for centuries and for good reason! It makes anyone and everyone look classy. Plus, the peekaboo of sultry skin under soft lace can get anyone in the mood. Whether it’s just a statement on your lingerie or the entire piece is covered in lace, it always looks good. Personally, we love it on our flutter lace teddy.

Bodysuits/Teddies

Speaking of teddies, they’re making a major splash in the fashion scene. Who wants to spend the time to pick out a matching set when you can just wear a bodysuit or teddy. These are also increasingly popular to use as outerwear. Just pair it with pants and a jacket for a sexy, yet comfortable look. Try it with our layered bustier bodysuit that gives structure, but has a stretchy mesh that’ll make sure you’re comfortable.

Inclusive Sizing

We come in all shapes and sizes, so it’s important that we’re not limited to the typical restrictive small through large sizing. With more options than ever, embrace the beautiful you with sizes that hug every curve. Most of the lingerie in our collection goes up to 3X, so you can feel sexy whether you’re in a babydoll, teddy, garter slip, or bodysuit.

The lingerie trends of today would be unrecognizable and possibly mind-boggling to women of the past. Who can even imagine what the future holds. Embrace your sex self with amazing lingerie!
